The LED cube

The cube is an 8x8x8 solid cube of RGB LEDs based on designs by Nick Shulze and Kevin Darrah, and latter, Supertech IT (who supplied the PCBs for the base).

The LED cube is based on an Arduino microcontroller and utilises various electronics techniques such as multiplexing and bit angle modulation in order to drive a large number of leds (64) each with red, green and blue channels (192 channels overall). In order to increase the size of the cube from others designs, I used welding rods to create a more ridgid structure that could withstand being moved around a little more. Time would tell that this only partially worked. Multiple house moves later and the cube has seen better days. One day I’ll build the mega cube as a stage install…. maybe!
